SANTA ANITA BATTLE OF THE STARS TOURNAMENT

Champion: Suk Tae Yoon

Players in the ultra high-end Santa Anita Battle of the Stars tournament put up $5,000 cash to enter, but the entire entry fee was used as a real money bankroll that players used throughout the two-day event.. Entrants bet their live bankrolls on win, place, show, exacta, and trifecta wagers on the races at Santa Anita on Saturday and Sunday, March 11-12. Since all monies went toward wagering, Santa Anita put up the entire $30,000 in prize money plus SIX big qualifying spots into the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship.

The contest attracted 50 players with one entry per person. A top prize of $25,000 went to the winner, while the runner-up took home $5,000. All players kept their final real-money bankrolls.

The contest’s winner, Mr. Suk Tae Yoon, turned his starting bankroll into a contest-winning total of $21,450 thanks, in part, to a winning straight trifecta that returned $214.50.

The contest paid out cash prizes to only the top two finishers, but all of the top six finishers qualified for the NHC. Finishing second was southern California clocker Toby Turrell, who had $16,301 in addition to his $5,000 second prize. Other NHC qualifiers included second-, third-, fourth-, fifth, and sixth-place finishers Sol Feingold, Thomas Owen, Mike Mayo, and Louis Constan. With his sixth-place finish, Constan officially becomes the first player ever to qualify for his sixth NHC finals. Mayo will be making his fifth NHC finals appearance.

*Winner Mr. Suk Tae Yoon is believed to be an associate of handicapper Gwyn Houston.

*Runner-up Toby Turrell is a southern California clocker and publisher of the Yellow Sheet.

LAUREL/MARYLAND JOCKEY CLUB CHAMPIONS TOURNEY

Champion: Heather Warfield

The Maryland Jockey Club Champions Tournament at Laurel was a one-day real-money tournament where players paid $100 to enter and then tried to amass the highest bankroll based on win, place, and show wagers after starting the day with a $200 betting stake. GULFSTREAM PARK’S TURF-VIVOR

Champion: James Templin

The Turf-Vivor tournament at Gulfstream Park has become one of the country’s most prestigious handicapping tournaments thanks to its $132,000 purse and unique format that pits the top 16 players head-to-head against each other in its single-elimination final round. Wagering in the contest is exclusively on Gulfstream Park races, but the 125-player field comes from all parts of the country. The winner of this three-day contest pockets $100,000, and the top three finishers all earn qualifying trips to the NHC finals.

Turf-Vivor costs $1,000 to enter, and requires players to try to earn the highest possible bankroll based on $2 mythical across-the-board bets on a total of 10 Gulfstream races over the first two days of the contest. Of the 125 original entrants, only the best 16 will advance to a one-day final round held on Sunday. The finalists then go head-to-head to determine the winners.

All finishers in the final 16 received a $500 cash prize in addition to a free cruise for two on Norwegian Cruise Lines (cruises not reflected in money earnings). Daily prizes were also awarded.

Eventual winner James Templin, an attorney from Pennsylvania, entered the final round as the fifth seed, then used four head-to-head wins to earn the $100,000 grand prize. Runner-up Joe Esposito, a financial consultant from Baltimore, took home $10,000 and also qualified for the NHC. Third-place Lisa Kaufman qualified for the NHC for the second year in a row at Turf-Vivor after finishing second in Turf-Vivor last year. Kauffman beat out the NTRA’s national tournament director Jeff Sotman, who had to settle for fourth. Sotman is a former Turf-Vivor winner (along with The Horseplayer Magazine publisher Tom Quigley).

* Runner-up Joe Esposito is a financial consultant from Baltimore.

* Third-place Lisa Kaufman is the daughter of tournament veteran Craig Kaufman. She finished second in Turf-Vivor last year.

* Bart Fooden is a former NHC qualifier.
